Premier Greyhound Racing signs with UK’s retail betting leaders

The new partnerships will see PGR supply the retail operations of Entain’s Ladbrokes and Coral, William Hill, Paddy Power and Betfred.

The agreements will see the recently launched greyhound racing rights holder supply pictures from its British tracks to the operators’ shops from the start of 2024.

PGR, which is a joint venture between Arena Racing (ARC) and Entain, owns nine of the 20 licensed British greyhound tracks and the media rights for five independent tracks.

Mark Kingston, director of PGR, said: “As important as greyhound racing is to the betting industry as a whole, greyhounds have always been a fundamental part of the betting shop service. Signing up all major retail bookmakers to take the Premier Greyhound Racing service is therefore the biggest endorsement we could have for the content we will be providing from January 2024.

“This commitment from retail bookmakers also underpins the viability of the service as we look to drive a competitive betting product allied to the very highest welfare standards for the greyhounds racing at our tracks.”

PGR, which launched in December 2021, was created to provide a seven-day-a-week schedule of greyhound racing on-screen to fans of the sport. It has committed to invest in Open Racing prize money, across its nine stadia, exceeding a combined £2.5m. This includes sponsorship of a series of current £20,000-to-the-winner Open Races, including the Premier Greyhound Racing Regency, St Leger, Oaks and Eclipse competitions.

Malta Gaming Authority explores voluntary ESG code

The authority said that it was exploring such an initiative in response to growing awareness around ESG matters.

Malta’s government has already developed a voluntary ESG reporting platform to encourage companies across all sectors to report on their performance publicly. Furthermore, beginning next year, all large or listed companies will be required to report under the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive.

In this context, the MGA said that although it is “proud of the consistent progress of the gaming sector”, a voluntary code of good practice for the remote gaming sector would help to guide and prepare local licensees for the upcoming ESG legislation.

A firm timeline has not been publicised for the development of the code.

“The code will set out the common priorities for ESG in gaming, taking into consideration the needs of key stakeholders, to reduce environmental, social and governance impacts whilst continually enhancing Malta’s reputation as a leading gaming jurisdiction,” the MGA said.

“Looking ahead, we expect to see more and more companies taking concrete actions towards becoming more sustainable, and we believe that reporting such efforts contributes positively to implementing change within the sector and improving its overall perception, while also addressing the increasing demand for transparency and accountability in the industry.”

Earlier today, the MGA suspended a licence belonging to betting operator Betago, citing a number of infringements to its Gaming Compliance and Enforcement Regulations.

Also this month, the MGA amended parts of its Player Protection Directive to mandate the monitoring of specified markers of harm.

Bill introduced in Hawaii would establish state regulator

Under the current law, Hawaii is one of two states in the US which have no forms of legalized gambling at all. This includes casinos, sports betting, bingo operations and lotteries.

The proposed bill would seek to change this by establishing the Hawaiian Lottery and Gaming Corporation, which would be charged with the conduct and regulation of gaming operations, including poker and casino games.

However, the law specifically states that this would not extend to sports betting.

Betago has Maltese licence suspended

The regulator said the brand, which obtained a federal sports betting licence in Germany in February 2021, has had its licence removed for three breaches of the jurisdiction’s gambling provisions

The MGA said Betago failed to discharge financial commitments for its operations and to pay cash due to the regulatory body. Betago also failed to comply with one or more applicable obligations in terms of any regulatory instrument or any other applicable law of Malta.

The MGA said the operator is no longer authorised to carry out any gaming operations, but is required to retain and provide access to all registered players to their player accounts and to refund all funds standing to the credit of players in line with the applicable law.

Betago is no longer listed on Germany’s white list of approved gambling operators and its betago.de and betago.com domains no longer work.
