US tribal gaming revenue hits record $39bn in 2021

The total was a 40% increase over 2020, while it was 13% more than in 2019, before the impact of Covid-19.

As well as the revenue total reaching record heights, the year-on-year increase was also the largest on record.

However, National Indian Gaming Commission (NIGC) chairman Sequoyah Simermeyer noted that many tribes still had a difficult year, and said the organisation would continue to support tribes that have struggled.

Leadstar Media lands igaming affiliate licence in West Virginia

The new permit will allow Leadstar to work with igaming operators that also hold a licence in West Virginia, as well as any brands that secure approval in the future.

Leadstar previously only held a sports wagering licence in the state, which it used to operate online sports betting supplier products such as Sportsbooksonline.com, Bettingapps.com, Bookiesbonuses.com/us and Unitedgamblers.com.

The new licence will cover all forms of legal online gambling in West Virginia.

“We are pleased to announce yet another state where we are now fully licensed to operate our full vertical of igaming supplier products, all of which strictly adhere to the laws and regulations set by the governing bodies in each state they operate in,” Leadstar chief executive Eskil Kvarnström said.

“Obtaining our full igaming supplier licence in West Virginia is yet another major stepping-stone for us in our journey of becoming the best igaming affiliate in every regulated US state.

“Although we are a company that successfully operates in different geographical markets all around the globe, we are admittedly most excited about the potential success and challenges that come with the US igaming industry.”

Inter Milan scores regional partnership with China-facing HTH

Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but it was confirmed that HTH will become an official regional partner of the team in Asia.

Neither Inter nor HTH released further information about the partnership agreement, which comes despite Italy’s strict ban on gambling sponsorship in football.

Italy implemented an outright ban on all forms of gambling advertisements in the country in January 2019, though deals in place prior to this date were allowed to run their course.

The ban applies only to Italy-facing deals, however, and other clubs such as Juventus and Lazio have signed sponsorship deals with a focus on other markets.

However, this ban has drawn heavy criticism, with the Italian Football Federation having last August written to the country’s government urging it to suspend the ban to help the sport recover financially from the losses incurred during the pandemic.

Some operators have sought to avoid this ban and strike deals with Italian clubs. Last week, SKS365-owned payment provider PlanetPay365 partnered with Torino FC, following similar deals with Roma and Fiorentina.

Such agreements are not in breach of the gambling advertisement ban as they were agreed through the PlanetPay365 payment services arm, rather than the SKS365 betting business.

Swintt appoints Mann to replace Flynn as chief executive

Mann replaces David Flynn, who will now take a seat on the Swintt board and focus on his role as CEO of the provider’s parent company Glitnor Group.

As CEO, Mann will be tasked with expanding the business, driving profitability and managing the provider’s overall operations moving forward.

Mann had served as Swintt’s COO since December 2020, having joined the business in May 2019 as business development director.

Prior to this, he was sales and business development director at Wadan, while he also spent three years with Spigo, first as international customers and content manager, and later head of sales.

Earlier in his career, Mann had a spell as bet settlement executive with Betway and also had six years with William Hill as a deputy manager.

“While I’m incredibly proud of everything Swintt has achieved during my time as CEO, David’s promotion means I couldn’t be leaving the running of the company in safer hands,” Flynn said.

“Over the past couple of years, David has proven he has the experience and expertise to flourish in the role while driving further growth for Swintt, and by handing over the reins, I’ll be able to fully focus my efforts on helping Glitnor Group become one of the most entrepreneurial and fastest growing business groups in the igaming industry.”

Mann added: “Over the past couple of years, we’ve witnessed incredible growth in a number of key markets and I’m very much looking forward to being able to continue contributing to this outstanding progress in my role as CEO.

“We have an exciting path ahead of us as we continue to expand our product portfolio, revamp our tech and launch into new markets around the globe, including the UK in the very near future.”

The appointment comes after Swintt earlier this month also named Etienne Azzopardi as its new operations director. Azzopardi has more than 22 years of experience of working in IT professional services, digital product development and commercial delivery, and joined the provider after a spell as commercial operations director at Quickspin.

Dazn Bet goes live with UK “soft launch”

The streaming business announced the launch of a new betting brand in April, which would be powered by technology from Pragmatic Play and named Dazn Bet.

Later that month, Dazn announced that Mark Kemp, who at the time was chief executive of BoyleSports, would lead the new betting brand.

The operator will do business under a Great Britain Gambling Commission licence held by One Click Limited. One Click had operated a number of B2C brands in Great Britain such as Casinoland and Royal Slots, before withdrawing from the market earlier this year.

Kemp said the the ultimate goal of Dazn Bet was to create a product that fully integrates betting into streaming. The business said it hoped to also integrate news updates, non-fungible tokens, tickets, and merchandise – as well as betting – into its streaming product in the near future.

“The initial launch of DAZN Bet is the start of an exciting journey across media and sports betting and further delivers on commitments we have made to revitalise sports viewing for fans,” Kemp said. “We are on a mission to create a richer entertainment product that over time is integrated into Dazn’s daily destination sports business, where possible.”

Kemp added that, with the current “soft launch” being just for the Dazn Bet beta product, it would still be a learning experience.

“While this market entry will be a learning phase, our goal is to provide sports fans with a fantastic recreational sports betting product for Dazn’s global sports fans community. It is a journey, and we begin it now.”

The move into the world of betting came after Dazn last year hired Shay Segev – formerly chief executive of Entain – as its new CEO. In addition to Segev, Dazn also hired a number of other Entain executives including Ian Turnbull to the newly created role of executive vice president for betting and gaming, and Sandeep Tiku as chief technology officer.

Massachusetts asks prospective operators to submit notice of intent form

In a statement accompanying the release of the form, the MGC said that the notice of intent does not serve as an application for a sports wagering licence and that a failure to apply does not preclude an organisation from applying at a future date.

The MGC stated that the form was to help the agency build a picture of the degree of interest it might expect in licensure:

“As the MGC continues to work to regulate and stand up sports wagering in Massachusetts, the MGC is requesting that any entity interested in obtaining a sports wagering license submit this notice of intent so a landscape of interest in sports wagering licences can come into focus.”

The announcement follows the 10 August news that state governor Charlie Baker had signed the Massachusetts Sports Wagering Act into law, legalising sports betting in the state, as well as appointing the MGC as the overseer of the new regulated market.

Dutch media giant considers legal challenge against ad ban

The country introduced a ban on “untargeted” advertising of games deemed to be “high-risk”, including online betting and casino gaming.

Under the ban, operators may not advertise on television, radio or in public spaces whether indoors or outdoors, from 1 January, 2023.

The ban followed a large amount of political pressure since online gambling launched in the country last year, with a number of MPs calling for strict limits on gambling ads.

In response to the ban, though, media conglomerate Talpa may now take legal action against the government.

A spokesperson for Talpa told iGB that the business – which owns channels such as SBS6, Net5 and Veronica – is “investigating” the possibility of a legal challenge.

While broadcast advertisements will be banned from the start of next year, sport sponsorship will remain in place until the start of 2025, to allow for clubs to find new sponsors.

Digital ads, meanwhile, will be subject to new restrictions as part of the ban, with advertisers having to prove that their ads cannot be seen by those aged under 24.
