NFL star Ridley suspended for season after betting on games

The suspension will run until at least the conclusion of the 2022 NFL season.

The betting activity in question took place over a five day period during November 2021, when Ridley was away from the team for mental health reasons.

On social media, Ridley claimed that he had bet a total of $1,500. Media reports allege that the wide receiver – who was named a second-team All-Pro in 2020 – had placed a number of parlay bets, some including the Falcons, while in his home state of Florida.

The league’s investigation found no evidence of the use of inside information, any instances of matches being corrupted, nor any indication that Ridley’s coaches and teammates were aware of his betting activity.

In a letter to Ridley confirming his suspension, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said: “There is nothing more fundamental to the NFL’s success – and to the reputation of everyone associated with our league – than upholding the integrity of the game. This is the responsibility of every player, coach, owner, game official, and anyone else employed in the league.

“Your actions put the integrity of the game at risk, threatened to damage public confidence in professional football, and potentially undermined the reputations of your fellow players throughout the NFL.

“For decades, gambling on NFL games has been considered among the most significant violations of league policy warranting the most substantial sanction. In your case, I acknowledge and commend you for your promptly reporting for an interview, and for admitting your actions.”

Ridley can apply for reinstatement on or after 15 February 2023, and he also has the right to appeal his suspension.

In December 2019, defensive back Josh Shaw was handed an indefinite suspension after he was found to have wagered on a number of games during that season. Shaw – who had missed the entire 2019 season with a shoulder injury – was reinstated in 2021 but was never signed by another NFL team.

M88 Mansion scores betting partnership with Badminton World Federation

The deal will run through to 2024, with M88 Mansion to serve as the official betting partner of BWF’s major championships.

The agreement will cover BWF events such as the BWF Thomas and Uber Cup Finals in 2022 and 2024, the BWF World Championships in 2022 and 2023 and the BWF Sudirman Cup Finals 2023.

“Badminton is recognised as a worldwide sport and has a fast-growing audience not only in Asia but globally,” M88 Mansion creative director Carlos Lopez said. “Joining forces with BWF will help elevate the connection between M88 Mansion and its Asian followers to expand its brand visibility in the region.

“We believe that this partnership will create compelling and sustainable value for both parties.”

BWF commercial and communications director Owen Leed added: “We are excited to announce our partnership with online betting platform M88 Mansion as we look to strengthen the sport’s profile globally.”

The new deal comes after it was confirmed that the Mansion Group yesterday (7 March) announced that it set to shutter its MansionBet brand as it pivots to a casino-only focus within European markets.

In an email to customers, the business said the brand – which operates in Great Britain – would be “closed to all customers” as of 31 March.

However, Mansion said it would keep operating its other brands, which, along with M88 Mansion, include MansionCasino, Casino.com and SlotsHeaven.

Bragg Gaming granted supplier licence in Ontario

Bragg Gaming, which also owns Oryx Gaming, Wild Gaming, Streak Gaming and Spin Games brands, will be offering its online casino content and turnkey software solutions to operators in Ontario.

Having completed the certification process, its portfolio of more than 5,000 titles will now be available cross the province.

This follows Bragg’s recent launch in the Bahamas last week, which the group described as having a similar demographic among its US and Canadian player base. The platform now spans multiple jurisdictions, with goals to gain licences in New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Michigan later this year.

The supplier has also recently launched in the UK, the Netherlands, Greece, Switzerland and the Czech Republic in the past 12 months.

This news follows Ontario announcing that it will open its legal igaming market on 4 April.

This concludes a process that dates back to April 2019, when the province’s government announced plans to end Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation’s monopoly on igaming, opening up the market to private operators.

It then moved forward with these plans in November 2020, with legislation introduced and passed in 2021.

California cardrooms file lawsuit against tribal sports betting initiative

The suit was filed at the Los Angeles Superior Court.

It aims to halt the California Sports Wagering Regulation and Unlawful Gambling Enforcement Act, which could appear on the November ballot. A referendum on sports betting legalization in California will take place in November if enough signatures are gathered in support of the ballot.

The two companies said the strategic alliance should pair Hensel Grad’s knowledge of US gaming regulation with USAbility’s technical and product expertise.

The two will provide their services for companies offering online sports betting, online casino and associated products.

Hensel Grad co-founder and partner Susan Hensel said: “This is a clear example of the sum being greater than the parts. Hensel Grad is a firm established by former gaming regulators to assist gaming companies in navigating the often complex and disparate US state-based regulatory environment.

“By integrating our services with an award-winning technical compliance provider, we provide an efficient, one-stop on ramp for companies interested in establishing a U.S. presence or growing an existing business into additional jurisdictions.”

Hensel, along with Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board attorney Joseph Grad, first launched the firm in May 2021.

Betfred expands US presence with sports betting launch in Arizona

Players in Arizona can now download the Betfred Sports-branded app and place pre-event and in-play bets on a wide range of professional and college sports competitions.

The launch comes after Betfred agreed a market access deal with We-Ko-Pa in August of last year.

The app will support an existing retail sports betting offering at a temporary facility at the WKP Sports & Entertainment Sports Bar, with a permanent sportsbook scheduled to open at the We-Ko-Pa Casino later this year.

“Three months ago, the We-Ko-Pa Casino Resort and Betfred Sports introduced sports betting kiosks at our beautiful desert gaming destination, and most recently opened a temporary full-service sportsbook,” We-Ko-Pa general manager Mary Ketterling said.

“Adding mobile apps is one more way we can offer Arizonans an easy, user-friendly and unparalleled sports betting experience.”

Betfred Sports chief operating officer Bryan Bennett added: “We look forward to offering customers in the entire state unique experiences that they can’t access on any other platform. Our team has worked diligently to bring this to fruition.”

Betfred also offers sports betting in Iowa, Pennsylvania, Louisiana, Washington and Colorado, with regulatory approval also pending in Nevada and Virginia.

Bojoko secures Michigan and West Virginia licences

Players in both states will be able to use Bojoko to browse and choose from licensed online casinos in each state.

Expansion into Michigan and West Virginia comes after Bojoko made its debut in the US in January last year when it launched in New Jersey.

Bojoko also said that plans are in place to expand its presence in the US further by pursuing licenses in other states across the country.

“Securing licences in West Virginia and Michigan form part of our wider plans for the US market and will allow us to significantly increase the size of our addressable audience,” Bojoko chief executive Joonas Karhu said.

“Bojoko has already hit the ground running in the Garden State where players are enjoying our open and honest approach to helping them browse and choose online casinos, and now players in West Virginia and Michigan will be able to do the same.

“Both states are showing fast growth with plenty of untapped potential, and we look forward to helping players in each state find the best licensed betting brands from them.”

Rhode Island sports betting handle hits $58.6m in January

The January figure was 47.2% higher than the $39.8m wagered in the same month last year and 6.7% more than $58.6m in December 2021. The total was also just short of the $60.2m record set in October of last year.

Online betting accounted for $33.5m of all wagers placed in January, while the remaining $25.1m was bet at retail sportsbook facilities at the Twin River and Tiverton Casino sites.

Twin River was again the main venue of choice for players with $18.8m wagered during the month, compared to $6.3m at the Tiverton Casino.

Mobile revenue amounted to $2.9m in January, while retail revenue reached $2.3m, split $1.6m at Twin River and $756,664 at the Tiverton Casino.

Figures from the Rhode Island Lottery also revealed that players won a total of $53.4m from sports betting during the month.

For the financial year to date, the state’s total handle in the seven months to January was $313.8m, while revenue reached $25.1m and player winnings $288.7m.

Women’s mentoring scheme to launch at iGB Affiliate London

Through the new programme, experienced members of the gambling industry will provide advice, feedback and guidance to women starting out in the affiliate market.

Confirmation of the initiative coincides with this year’s International Women’s Day, while the initiative will officially launch at iGB Affiliate London 2022, which will take place from 13-14 April at ExCeL London.

“The theme for International Women’s Day 2022 is ‘Gender equality today for a sustainable tomorrow’ using the hashtag #BreakTheBias,” iGB portfolio director Naomi Barton said.

“Rather than present Ascend as a fait accompli, we felt it important for it not to be a top-down organisation. Instead, we want to use iGB Affiliate London as an opportunity to meet with women in the igaming and affiliate sectors, listen to their experiences and establish the best ways of addressing the issues that are important to them and make best use of our resources as an industry.”

The announcement comes after last week it was also revealed that the iGB Affiliate London conference will feature a series of business-centric conference streams with speakers from the sector’s leading authorities.

The iGB Affiliate Conference series will include 13 streams and feature sessions dedicated to areas such as the 2022 Fifa World Cup, social media branding and design, mobile marketing in the US, responsible gambling, casino live streaming and best compliance practice.

Other topics will include geo/vertical market segmentation, international digital marketing and localisation, App Store optimisation and SEO disasters, as well as a panel dedicated to the development of the affiliate sector in the US market.
